Will Bake for Food, Northwest Harvest

by Karen on November 13th, 2010

Mt Rainier, incredible lately

The northwest is quite unique. We live in such a bountiful area with gorgeous mountain and water views, we can grow some of the most beautiful flowers and flavorful produce, we have some of the best restaurants and Washington state wines are developing a fantastic reputation.  We truly have a lot to be thankful for living in the northwest.   Here is an opportunity to give back (and get some great treats too).

Seattle food bloggers are joining together to feed the hungry this holiday season with a bake sale and food drive for Northwest Harvest.  Every year as a family we try to do something to help this food bank, usually by donating money, but this will be the first time that I actually get out there and put in some physical effort.  My kids have worked in the Northwest Harvest warehouse sorting food and together we have worked soup kitchens through a program at school but this event feels different to me.

Perhaps what attracts me it is the organic nature of the event started by two food bloggers, an idea that has taken on a life of its’ own.

You should plan to attend.

There will be several bloggers providing gluten free baked goods, myself included.  Here is what you do:   bring  non-perishable food to donate to NW Harvest and you will receive tickets that allow you to “buy” the baked goods the various food bloggers have prepared. The more food you bring the more tickets you receive.  It is best to bring good quality food the shelters can use–not the old stuff in the back of your cupboard!

For those on a gluten free diet this is an opportunity to taste baked goods you have never had the chance to before……..  I am still deciding what I will make for the event.  I will definately have something great that I can offer as a  “free taste”.  I am thinking of making one of my gluten free apple pies and then cutting it up into little sample cups.  I will also bake something that I can package individually to “sell”.  And I will try to make a third item that is GF, dairy-free, and egg-free.
